A wonderful history awaits you in Edirne, which houses a world-famous artifact. The city of Edirne was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian under the name Hadrianopolis. The city, which is the capital of the Thrace province, has hosted nearly 20 major wars. During the Middle Ages, the city was besieged by the Bulgarian king Krum. In 1369, it was besieged by the Ottoman Sultan Murad and captured as a result of a successful campaign. During the Ottoman period, the citys name was changed to Edirne. The city was the countrys capital for 90 years until Mehmed the Conqueror made Istanbul the capital in 1543. During the period when it was the capital, many Turkish tribes settled in the area and the area was Turkish. The city lived its golden age as the Ottoman sultans lived between Edirne and Istanbul in the seventeenth century. The earthquakes that occurred in the city in 1745 and 1751 caused a serious deterioration and weakening of the city of Edirne. In 1829, the Russian-occupied city came under Ottoman rule again after a short time. Edirne, which was damaged during the Ottoman-Russian War in 1877, was returned to the Ottomans by the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913. The city, which could not reach its former glorious days after that day, is one of the most important points of our country in terms of historical artifacts with its heritage from the Ottoman Empire.
