The Great Synagogue was built after a fire in 1905. In this fire, 13 synagogues in the city were burned and built by the Jewish community in 1906 with the permission of the Ottoman government. Prayers began in the synagogue in 1983. In 1997, the wall and ceiling of the synagogue collapsed. Although the restoration work that started in the synagogue in 2008 was interrupted from time to time for various reasons, the synagogue was inaugurated on March 26, 2015 with the participation of 500 people from the Turkish Jewish community. The Holy Great Synagogue is considered one of the largest in Europe as well as being the largest synagogue in Turkey and was a very important place of worship for the Jewish world.
