The history of Mor Gabriel Monastery, where the Assyrians lived for years goes back to 1,600 years. This place of worship, which is described as the second Jerusalem, is called by different names in each period. It was built using cut stone, bequeathed from the Byzantine era, and the domes and doors from the Byzantine era, the bas-reliefs on the walls of the building, which is said to have only one room covered in gold, will amaze you. Mor Gabriel, the oldest Syriac-Orthodox monastery in the world, has been used as a place of worship and a refuge since the day it opened. The gold-plated decorations and vineyards in the mosaics on the ceiling, in the building known as the House of Saints, saints who lost their lives in different periods were buried in tombs set in 15 niches, it is the largest memorial cemetery in the city. Many patriarchs, metropolitans, priests and priests grew up in the monastery, which is also a center of science. This place is the most important among the Syriac churches, Syriac which is accepted as Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, is one of the most active centers where prayers and worship are taught to the younger generations.
