The Pechen Castle in Milas, is believed to have been built during the Old Bronze Age. The fortress was built on steep rock blocks at the edge of the Milas plain, which created a very difficult defense line to capture. This feature of the castle enabled it to be used as an administrative center in the Byzantine and Ottoman eras in the past. During the research, many ancient writings, objects of daily use and tombs were found in the castle. This indicates that the area was used as a cemetery in the past. The castle, where traces of the Hellenistic period can be seen, was used during wars and also served as a prison for a certain period. The wonderful view of Milas, which can be seen from the point where the fortress is located, also makes this place attractive. The inclusion of the castle in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage in 2012 also proves the importance of the castle.
