Keramos, which served as an important episcopal center during the Byzantine period, is one of the ancient cities that have been preserved at the base level on Bakıcak Hill, 40 km south of Milas, and the history of the city dates back to 3000 years ago. The ancient city, named after Keramos, son of Dionysus and Ariadne and founder of the art of pottery, is believed to have been founded in the 8th century BC. As a result of the Peace of Apamea, which occurred in 188 BC, Keramos was handed over to Rhodes with the Caria region, in 133 BC the city was transferred to the Roman province of Asia.
