The Hagia Sophia Temple, built in the Byzantine era over a gymnasium built by the Romans in the 7th century. Renovated after an earthquake in the eleventh century. The building, which was converted into a mosque in 1331 with Orhan Gazi’s conquest of Iznik, was renovated by Mimar Sinan during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. During repairs in 1935 and 1953, floor mosaics were discovered decorated with colored stones and semicircular seating levels.
