Castle of Kestel, was the frontier fortress of the Eastern Roman Empire, the Ottomans seized the castle after the Battle of Dempuse in 1306. During Mehmeds time, the revelation of Mehmed Effendi made it a frontier fortress and began to be used as an outpost. After the war between the Ottomans and Russia in 1877, many immigrants settled here. It grew with increasing immigration and became a center in 1938, township in 1960 and district in 1990.
