The bridge was built in 1433 by Hoca Sinan, a merchant from Bursa. It was made of aggregate and stone, and cut stone was only used in the arch section. It has been restored many times but still maintains its authenticity. The flood disaster of 1844 also severely damaged the bridge, and the bridge has undergone an important renovation. In 1997, two eyes were added to the bridge, which allowed it to take on its current shape.
