The building that houses the Sakip Sabanci Mardin City Museum and Dilek Sabanci Art Gallery, built during World War II, was built as a cavalry barracks in 1889 by the governor of Diyarbakir, Haji Hasan Pasha, during the reign of Abdülhamid and served in this way for many years. The architecture of the building is the Armenian Sarkis Elias Luli and it was constructed of two floors, it is entered from the door in the south direction. It is understood that the barracks in the basement were used as a barn, after that these barracks served as a military branch of the gendarmerie command and the gendarmerie station and between 1991-2003 as a tax office . In 2000, the importance of the work led by the Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of Environmental and Cultural Values was clarified once again and the need to carry out restoration work was emphasized. On the upper floor the handicrafts, living quarters, social life and history of the city that make up the structure of Mardin are displayed.
