Lake Iznik, which is the largest natural lake in the Marmara region and the fifth largest natural lake in Turkey, is a sweet water lake formed with a depth of 80 meters. The area around the lake is surrounded by agricultural fields and olive groves. The area meets the criteria of a special environmental protection zone with 30 pairs of cormorants and 250 pairs of nights, which leads to the establishment of mixed colonies among the dense reeds, and the lake was declared a protected area in 1990. Nearly 9 thousand hectares of farmland were irrigated with lake water It is expected that this area will be increased by 6 thousand 945 hectares, with the ongoing facilities. In addition, farmers withdraw water to irrigate agricultural areas along the lakes shore.
