It is estimated that it was established by two priests named Barnabas and Sophronius who came from Athens during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I (375-395). Also known as the Virgin Mary among the people, the monastery continued its function until 1923. The monastery consists of a rock church, several churches, student rooms, a sacred fountain, a kitchen, a guest house and a library, and this group of buildings is built on a large area. While the frescoes that supply the inner and outer walls of the rock church, date back to the eighteenth century, these frescoes consist of three layers made in three different periods and the influences of Turkish art on the cabinets, cells and fireplaces in the buildings surrounding the courtyard. Legend! According to legend, there are monks who, when they saw Jesus and the Virgin Mary in their dreams, set off for the place where they saw him. They told each other about their dreams, so the two monks began building on the current site of the monastery and building the monastery.
