Originally the Church of Saint Sophia, the building was constructed by Manuel Komnenos I in the mid-13th century during the Empire. The building was converted into a mosque in 1584. The Russians also used the building as a weapons hospital and military dispensary during World War I. After the war, the building was used as a mosque again.
