Manisa Castle consists of two parts, an inner castle and an outer castle. In the Hellenistic era, there was a fortress on Mount Sibylos like the Acropolis in the city. It is not known when and when this castle was built, but it is known that the city of Magnesia was surrounded by walls. It is believed that the castle was destroyed in an earthquake in AD 17. It is noted that the inner castle was greatly renovated and surrounded by outer walls during the Byzantine period. Thanks to these walls had a great impact on the resistance during the Arab raids. The inner castle was built in 1222 during the reign of Emperor Joan Ducasse Watzer III. The castle, which was restored during the Ottoman period, had no significance as the walls were damaged in the 15th century, the settlement area overflowed the walls and the city began to spread around the religious buildings.
