The ancient city of Sardis is also known as Sarthe. It has a history of nearly 4000 years. It is of great importance because it was the capital of the Lydians and the starting point of the Kings Way. The cemetery, court buildings, Pentip, ruins of various houses, baths, acropolis and places of worship in the city are among the most important monuments that can be seen, especially the stadium and the Temple of Artemis are very interesting. This temple was destroyed in the 17th century and was rebuilt by Emperor Tiberius according to its original form. It is clear how important agriculture and trade were in this ancient city, which dates back to the Lydian civilization, where coins were first minted. Because the old city is spread over a very large area, not every part of it can be seen.
