The ancient city of Heraklia, built in the 8th century BC in the Gulf of Latmos, is among the important historical monuments in the area with the Temple of Athena remaining to this day. The name of the city comes from the name of the philosopher Heraclitus, one of the important mythological symbols of the past. After cutting off its connection with the sea, the city lost its importance in the 1st century BC. In the past the area was located at a very difficult point in terms of transportation, which made it an ideal place as a haven for monks. A total of 13 monasteries were built in the area. It has the characteristics of Karian cities to a large extent. Surrounded by 65 towers, the city has a total length of 6.5 km. The Temple of Athena and the Agora section are among the most important points in the city.
