The ancient city of Mios, is known to have been founded by the son of King Kodros. Overshadowed by the ancient city of Miletus, the city was abandoned and accepted as one of the poorest and most valuable among the Ionian cities. It is known that the city experienced its heyday in the 5th century BC, when it became a member of the Athena-Delos Sea Union. The first excavations in the city began in 1908.
