💡 Important Note for Tourists: Wearing Socks (Çorap) in Turkish Mosques

Local Custom & Cleanliness: In Turkish mosques, it is strongly customary and preferred to wear clean socks on the carpets. Entrances often feature signs reading: «Lütfen Çorapsız Girmeyiniz» (Please do not enter barefoot without socks).

  • Hygiene & Cleanliness: Designed to keep the carpets clean, fresh, and free from moisture or skin fungi after ablution.
  • After Ablution: Dry your feet thoroughly with paper towels before putting on your socks to keep the prayer carpets dry.
  • Traveler Tip: Always carry an extra pair of clean socks in your daypack (some large mosques also have automated sock dispensers at the entrance).

💡 Helpful Tip for Travelers: Difference between Cami and Mescit?

In Turkey: Cami refers to a Grand Mosque with a minaret where Friday prayers and daily prayers are held. Mescit (Masjid) refers to smaller prayer rooms or local spaces intended for daily five prayers without Friday sermons, commonly found in airports, shopping malls, and highway rest areas.

Traveler Prayer Rules & Concessions in Turkey

Practical Islamic guidance on shortening, combining prayers, and worship in transit for tourists

Traveler Distance (Safar)
The travel distance qualifying for shortening and combining prayers is approximately 80 to 85 km or more. Day trips (such as Istanbul to Bursa/Sapanca, or Trabzon to Uzungöl/Rize) exceed this distance, qualifying for travel concessions.
Shortening & Combining Prayers
Travelers shorten 4-raka'ah prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) to 2 raka'ahs, and may combine Dhuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha when needed to avoid hardship.
Praying in Transportation
High-speed trains (YHT) and large ferries have dedicated prayer rooms. On buses, travelers pray at highway rest stops; if time is running out, prayer may be performed seated towards the Qibla.
