In the rocky masses that rise along the valley are caves of various sizes, dating back to 15,000 BC and 60,000 BC. The cave dwellers who lived in the Stone Age made all their tools out of stone, wood and bone. They also made and used various tools such as hand axes, spearheads, cutters and scrapers to carve stone. The caves were declared a protected area in 1977 and opened to visitors in 2013. A museum in the valley was opened in 2014 and it has become one of the newer museums in Samsun.
