The first lighthouse was built in 1863, French engineers rebuilt the lighthouse in 1882, giving it a more modern look. It was built in the form of an octagon as a small tower, where the lighting fixtures were placed. For more than 150 years, it has guided ships entering the Black Sea with light up to 14 nautical miles. The tower also serves as an observatory that weather forecasters use around the clock to monitor the weather. The white lights of the lantern have now been replaced with red.
