Founded by King Eumenes II of Pergamon after 190 BC, it was originally a fortified military colony. It was destroyed during the earthquake of the city in the year 60 AD, and it was rebuilt during the second and third centuries when the natural hot springs appeared and became an important health destination. What remains of it today is the Street of Large Columns near the travertine deposits, which extend between the cemetery in the north and the Byzantine church at the southern end.
