It was built in 1452 at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, by order of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed Han, in order to prevent aid to the Byzantines during the siege of Istanbul. The castle is one of the most important historical places in Canakkale, which was protected in 1980. It is noted that the city walls, which were built of smooth rubble stones, are thinner than other castles in the area. It has a three-leaf clover-shaped structure. The inner castle consists of seven floors and inside the castle there are dungeons.
